16 Rebels killed near Vavunia says Army

29 August 2006 (New Delhi)

Army spokesman Brig. Prasad Samarasinghe had told this writer from Colombo that 16 rebel fighters were killed in an encounter with troops near the volatile north Sri Lankan town Vavunia.16

" This morning, the rebels made an attempt to infiltrate the Forward Defence Line near Puvarasankulam in Vavunia, we retaliated and the rebels had to retreat to their positions. We have recovered the bodies of 16 rebels from the area."

The army says it did not suffer any casualties.

Elsewhere, in the battle for rebel held Sampoor in the restive eastern district of Trincomalee, the army says 13 soldiers have died and 79 were injured in the last 48 hours. The army claims over 66 rebel fighters were killed. Soldiers have counted 27 bodies of rebel fighters and the army says it will release pictures soon.

The LTTE military spokesman has so far not been available for comment.


Samarasinghe said that rebels fired mortars at a convoy of 11 trucks carrying essential civilian supplies to rebel held areas in Killinochi and Mullathivu this morning."The trucks carrying essential supplies the effcted people had to turn back from the Oomanthy check post after they came under direct shelling. The civilians living in these areas require these supplies urgently." he said.
