The UFO

Rajesh Sundaram

One hundred magnificent dark horses,
pulling a brilliant golden chariot.

Can't see the charioteer, the rein holder... as I strain into the sky

The wheels don't move as the carriage flies

No headwinds, no tailwinds

Just an aura that almost blinds me

I shield my eyes and look again

The horses, the carriage and the aura are all gone

I smile and move on, the UFO is gone

Theme for the Class of 94 Reunion

Scaffolding

Masons, when they start upon a building,

Are careful to test out the scaffolding;

Make sure that planks won't slip at busy points,

Secure all ladders, tighten bolted joints.

And yet all this comes down when the job's done,

Showing off walls of sure and solid stone.

So if, my dear, there sometimes seems to be

Old bridges breaking between you and me,

Never fear. We may let the scaffolds fall,

Confident that we have built our wall.
