The Only All Woman De-Mining Team In The World

This is a picture of the only all woman de-mining team in the world. They work for the Humanitarian De-mining mission under the "Norwegian poeple's Aid" in Tamil Tiger held North Sri Lanka.

We shot one Saturday afternoon with them at this minefield near Jaffna.

The painted sticks kept to the right of deminers who are sitting are used to demarcate the cleared areas from the uncleared areas.

The process of de-mining is slow, and it could take months to clear just a few meters of land. Since the work is stressful, these de-miners are required by the tough international standards not to work for more than 45 minutes at a stretch and 4 and a half hours in a day.

In this picture the deminers pose for a picture after the end of their shift.

There is a machanised way of doing it, which does the work much faster....but most of the machinery cannot be used for want of spares.

This Picture has been taken by Nilanjan Chowdhury. Posted by Picasa
