Pro-Rebel Politician Shot in Jaffna
21 August 2006 (New Delhi)
Police sources confirm that a senior politician and former parliamentarian belonging to the pro-rebel Tamil National Alliance, TNA , Sinnathamby Sivamaharajah, 68, was shot and killed in Jaffna. He was shot at from close range with a pistol by unidentified assailants.
The pro-rebel TamilNet reports that Sivamaharajah was shot at his temporary residence inside the High Security Zone, HSZ of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in Tellippalai Sunday night around 7:20 p.m (IST).
However, the Sri Lankan army has denied that he was killed within the HSZ. An Army Press release says he was shot inside his residence at Tellippalai, 14 kilometers north-east of Jaffna town.
"It is significant to note that there are no civil residences-temporary or permanent-in the HSZ. As such, the victim who is also a former Parliamentarian had actually been a resident in DHURGAPURAM outside the HSZ.In this context, the attempt to show the killing to have taken place in the SLA controlled HSZ is absurd. " the army said in a press release.
Mr. Sivamaharajah is a former parliamentarian (Tamil United Liberation Front) and a senior member of Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK), the main constituent party of the pro-rebel Tamil National Alliance (TNA).
