Government to Send Food and Medical Supplies to Jaffna
21 Aug 2006 (New Delhi)
A government spokesman has told this writer that a ship carrying 4000 tonnes of food, medical supplies and other provisions from Colombo will leave on Monday. He said it is expected to reach Jaffna on August 23.
The supplies are being sent for the first time since August 11, when fierce fighting broke out around Jaffna between the army and Tamil tiger rebels.
Essential supplies have been in short supply and prices of food and medicines have gone up many times in Jaffna. Curfews imposed to maintain law and order by the police too have led to disruption in supplies.
Supply through road has been cut off since the crucial A9 road was closed because of the fighting.
" There was a delay in loading food items and other provisions on to the ship due to bad weather. Supplies are now being loaded. The Government Agent of Jaffna, Mr. K. A. Ganesh has confirmed that there is sufficient food till the 24th of this month. There will be no shortage of food items and other relief supplies from 23rd onwards as the Government has made arrangements to dispatch supplies to the Jaffna peninsula. " a press release issued by the government read.
The Sri Lankan government claimed that there is no shortage of petroleum products in Jaffna as fresh fuel supplies have already been sent. It claimed that electricity supply has also been restored in the Jaffna Peninsula. However, most phonelines across the peninsula continue to be down since August 11.

Meanwhile, sources in Jaffna say closure of banks because of the escalating violence has led to a shortage of cash. The situation is worsened by the rush of people at banks to make emergency withdrawals.
Many banks have reportedly fixed limits on withdrawals allowed per day. Large queues outside banks have become a common feature outside many banks in Jaffna during business hours.
