Flash : Blast in Colombo, Many Injured

Blast in Colombo, More than a dozen Injured

14 Aug, 2006 (New Delhi)

The Inspector General of Police, Sri Lanka Chandana Fernando has confirmed to this writer from colombo that a blast has left many injured in Colombo.

He said the blast was triggered by a bomb possibly concealed in a three wheeler. Three vehicles have been completely damaged in the blast.

Police teams have just arrived at scene of the crime he said.

Eyewitnesses speaking to agencies have put the toll at 4 dead. This has not been officialy verified.

"The blast has occurred at Aranda Kumaraswamy street near the Liberty Round about, not near the Taj Samudra hotel like media reports are suggesting. The security for the Indian team is tight and there is no need to panic" Fernando said.

The scene of the blast is a few meters away from the Presidential Palace.
