Attack on Kankesanthurai Harbour Foiled, 80 Rebels Killed : SL Army
Army sources say 80 Tamil tiger rebel fighters were killed and 12 rebel boats destroyed after, the navy foiled a rebel bid to attack the main Kankesanthurai port in Jaffna, North Sri Lanka. Navy gunboats engaged the rebels in fierce fighting that lasted for over six hours and ended in the early hours of Saturday in Point Pedro near the harbour.
Two navy Fast Attack Craft , FAC were slightly damaged and two sailors sustained minor injuries the spokesman said.
A rebel spokesman talking to this writer from Killinochi did confirm "clashes off the coast of point pedro" but said he could not verify the army claim on rebel fighters killed.
"Army positions along the coast came under fire and the troops vacated their posts from the coastal defence line. Civilians, around 900 families, from Supparmadam, Koddady, Munai, Katkovalam, Moorkam and Punithanagar villages have sought refuge at St. Anthony's church " a pro-rebel website said.
