Update on Latest Position in East Sri Lanka

Army Toll 12, Rebels reported at 40

The spokesman for the center of National security in Colombo, Major Rajapakse has said that the Sri Lankan Army has slowed its advance towards Mavil Aru Anicut on the second day of its ground offensive against Tamil Tiger rebels in the restive eastern district of Trincomalee. This he said was required as the rebels have laid land mines and traps in the way of the advancing troops. He said the troops were facing tough resistance from hundreds of rebel fighters. The rebels were using small arms, heavy machine guns and were said to be moving heavy caliber guns to the forward positions.

12 Sri Lankan troops have so far been killed since the start of the ground offensive started Sunday evening. 19 have been injured.

"the information we get from the ground and the intercept of communication from the rebels suggest that they have suffered heavy casualties. 40 dead and many more injured." says Rajapakse.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan Air Force jets pounded rebel positions around the area for the seventh straight day today.
