Shells hit Trinco navy base, troop movement said targeted[TamilNet, August 01, 2006 09:44 GMT]
Artillery shells began hitting the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) Trincomalee Naval base as a ship transporting more than 800 Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troopers approached the naval base around 2:25 p.m. Tuesday. More than 22 shells have hit the naval base. Naval officials in Colombo denied the reports that an SLN owned ship was damaged. However, informed defence sources in Colombo said a Dvora Fast Attack Craft was damaged in the artillery fire. Tension prevails in Trincomalee town. The SLN has instructed civilians to vacate the adjoining areas of the Naval base.
Police sources in Trincomalee said at least one shell had hit the naval headquarters.
Around 3:00 pm a SLAF helicopter landed inside the Naval Headquarters located along Trincomalee harbour and left immediately.
Casualty details are not known.
Shops and government offices were closed. Roads in the east port town are deserted. SLA and SLN soldiers are seen checking every one within the perimeter of Trincomalee town.
