Artillery Gun Accident at Sri Lankan Army's Allai Kantale Camp

10 Aug 2006 (New Delhi)

Sri Lankan Army Sources confirm that an artillery gun, firing at rebel positions from the Allai Kantale army camp near Mavil Aru in the restive eastern district of Trincomale caught fire due to over- heating.

A fire started after a shell exploded inside the artillery gun. Initial reports indicate that the gun was over- heated because of excessive firing.

The fire soon spread to artillery rounds kept around it. A loud explotion could be heard around the camp.

A government website claimed that the fire was soon contained without much damage to life or ammunition kept in the camp

"Troops in the detachment contained the fire to a limited area without allowing it to spread." the website said.

It is not clear if there have been any deaths or injuries due to this accident.

The camp is 8 km from Somapura on the Somapura-Kantalai road. It is part of the forward area from which Sri Lankan forces are conducting offensive operations against the Liberation Tigers in the Maavil Aru area.
