Flash : Blast in Colombo

Rajesh Sundaram, Delhi, 8 Aug, 2006

An EXPLOSION near a vehicle opposite the St Paul's Girls school, BAMBALAPITIYA in Colombo this afternoon has left 2 people dead .

The vehicle was carrying a Tamil politician identified as Shankarapillai Shivathasan of the Tamil political party "Eelam Peoples Democratic Party."

The dead include the personal security officer of Shivadasan and a child who was standing near the blast site.

3 others including Shivadasan are in hospital with injuries.

The EPDP is opposed to the Tamil tiger rebels and are part of Sri Lankas ruling coalition.

The blast happened in the same high secuirty and heavily fortified neighbourhood where Douglas Devananda leader of the EPDP lives. An assasination attempt on him was repulsed in 2004...after a female suicide bomber was led away from his house minutes before she blew herself up.

Shivathasan is related to Devananda.

Police say they suspect the Tamil Tiger rebels to be behind the blast.
